7 Day Photography Holidays in Greece with Nigel Howard

Itineraries

ATHENS & THE ATHENIAN COAST
£835 Half Board (excluding flight)
Departures: 8th May & 5th June 2004

Athens and its coastal region provide a wide variety of scenes and landscapes for the Photographer – ancient monuments and archaeological sites, colourful street life, marinas and ports, as well as a beautiful coastline. Based at the four star Sea View Hotel in the coastal resort of Glyfada, the five excursions during our Athens photography holiday, are designed to cover all of these, plus a full day to the island of Hydra. One day is left free for relaxation, shopping and exploring

The Acropolis, Plaka, The Agora and Lycabettos hill
A visit to The Acropolis, standing majestically on its hill in the centre of Athens will be followed by a stroll through Plaka, the old quarter of Athens, with its narrow streets, restaurants, tree lined squares and archaeological sites and then to the Agora or ancient market. Finally on this excursion to Lycabettos hill, pointing skywards, like a finger and with panoramic views over the whole of Athens and the coast.

Street Market
Mid week is the time for local street markets, each one, a blaze of colour, with flower stalls, fresh fruit and vegetables of every description, clothes and material stalls - all laid out under brightly coloured awnings and umbrellas.

Masts and Hulls
A further day will be dedicated to photography at the ports and Marinas along the Athens coast, starting with the bustling activity of the commercial port of Piraeus and then to the picturesque old yacht harbour of Mikrolimano, with its outdoor restaurants lining the quayside, backed by tier upon tier, of traditional Greek houses. Marina Alimou, the largest yacht marina in Greece, with over a thousand berths, provides a latticework of white masts, set against the blue sky, as well as a large land based repair and storage area, with travelling cranes.

Sunset At Cape Sounion and Coastal Scenery
The journey along the coast, for the sunset at Cape Sounion, provides a complete contract in landscape and scenery. Along the journey there will be breaks at the small sandy bays of Vouliagmenis and Agia Marina, backed by their red cliffs, where there will also be opportunity for swimming. Further stops will be made at scenic points along the coast before arriving at Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon, God of The Sea. Here the sunset can be truly awe inspiring - a ball of fire, sinking into and lighting up the sea and the pillars of the Temple

The Island of Hydra
A full day excursion by Hydrofoil, takes you to the traffic free island of Hydra where the only form of transport is the donkey and water taxis. Birthplace of the fight for Greek independence in the 19th Century, cannon still overlook the harbour. The picturesque town and the island scenery have made Hydra the home for many artists.

Single room supplement £ 100 per week

THE PELOPPONESE
MOUNTAINS, MONASTERIES & MONUMENTS

£940 full board (excluding flight)
Departures: 15th May & 12th June 2004

On arrival in Athens, you will stay overnight at the Parthenon Hotel, which we have specifically selected for its proximity to The Acropolis and Plaka, which you will visit on Sunday morning, before setting off for the mountains of the Pelopponese.

Corinth Canal
En route, we will take a short detour into Corinth, for the world famous view of the Corinth Canal, from the old bridge in the centre of the town. The journey then continues to the small mountain town of Vytina, where you will stay for the next two nights.

Mountains and Monasteries
From Vytina, there will be an excursion through the mountains, with their varied landscapes, unique villages and cliff top monasteries.

Lake Kaiafa
The next part of your holiday takes you to Kaiafa, on the Western Coast of the Pelopponese, where you stay for four nights at The Kaiafa Lake Hotel.
During your stay at Kaiafa there will be three further excursions, including both morning and evening visits to the beautiful and serene Lake Kaiafa, with its wooded banks.

Olympia
The ancient archaeological site of Olympia, which is only a forty minute drive from Kaiafa, was home, 3500 years ago, to the first Olympic Games. Here there is the original stadium, virtually complete and unchanged for thousands of years, as well as the remains of a number of temples. There will also be an opportunity for shopping in the nearby town of Olympia

The Island of Zakynthos

A full day excursion to the island of Zakynthos, provides a complete change of activity, scenery and landscape. The ferry for Zakynthos leaves from the small ferry terminal of Killini and takes you to the town of Zakynthos, with its Venetian square.

From there you head for the north of the Island, with a break at the hill top village of Volimes, with its street stalls, selling hand made lace before continuing to the north coast for a short boat trip to the blue caves. On the return there will be a break at the cliffs overlooking the shipwreck - one of the most photogenic sites on the island.
Single room supplement £90
