Destinations - The Island of Zakynthos (Zante)
Most southerly of the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos is a one and a half hour sail by ferry boat from Killini, a small ferry terminal on the west coast of The Pelopponese. Fifty years ago, much of the island was devastated by a major earthquake.
Zakynthos town and Venetian Architecture
The town of Zakynthos was completely rebuilt - apart from the one building which, some say, miraculously, was left standing amongst the rubble, the beautiful church of St. Dionysus - and the large square with its Venetian architecture has been carefully restored in its original architectural style.
Volimes
Although it is a popular tourist island, the centre and mountainous north of the island, remain comparatively untouched. Volimes, a hill village, is famous for its hand made lace and “flokates “ – hand woven rugs which are displayed in bright profusion on street stalls set up outside the local houses. Volimes is a traditional Greek village, with its small square and some still cobbled streets – just one donkey wide.
Monastery of Anafonitria
En route to Volimes is the ancient monastery of Anafonitria, still used as a place of worship and still having the original cells, once occupied by the monks

Blue caves and shipwreck
A short boat trip along the rugged northern coast, leads to the famous blue caves, where time and tide have eaten away the white cliffs and formed almost magical caves, with their phosphorescent blue waters. Nearby is a white sandy bay, where, like some giant stranded monster, lies a shipwreck – perhaps one of the most photogenic sites in the whole of Greece
